Sciatica Treatment From Your Maryland Farms Chiropractor

Sciatica is leg pain that may be intermittent or chronic that negatively impacts the ability to enjoy normal activities. The feeling is often described as a shooting pain that goes down the back of the leg. It can also be experienced as lower back pain, hip pain, or tingling that shoots down the leg. Sciatica may cause weakness in the legs or difficulty with movement. Usually, the discomfort is focused on one side of the body. The pain may be felt when walking, standing or even when sitting. At Maryland Farms Chiropractic, we can provide for sciatica pain, allowing you to enjoy moving freely again.

Sciatica

Causes of Sciatica

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body. It runs from the base of the spinal column, into the hip and down the back of the leg. A number of conditions can cause pinching or impingement of this nerve, which then results in pain, numbness or tingling. The most common cause is herniation of the discs that cushion the vertebrae that make up the spinal column. The displacement of the disc leads to pressure on the sciatic nerve. Spinal stenosis, a condition in which the spinal canal becomes narrower, can cause pressure on the nerve. Spondylolisthesis refers to the slippage of one vertebrae over the other, which can narrow the opening through which the nerve passes. Piriformis syndrome causes a small muscle within the buttocks to spasm, which can lead to nerve pain.

Treating Sciatica Discomfort

Tests to diagnose sciatica include x-rays, MRIs and nerve conduction tests. Conventional treatment may involve strong pain medications, injections or surgery. Chiropractic treatment offers a drug-free, non-invasive alternative that effectively relieves pain and improves mobility. Your Brentwood chiropractor can provide spinal adjustments to stabilize the spinal column and relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve. We can also provide massage therapy and corrective exercises to improve your ability to move comfortably and efficiently. Your chiropractor will carefully evaluate your symptoms and design a care plan to suit your unique needs.
